Abstract:

The project focused on the possibility to lower moisture ratio of biomass for pellet production by methods different from traditional air-heating drying; in particular three different methods were compared:

1.On-field drying

2.Drying by Secondary milling

3.Humidity loss by pelletting

Results were:

1.For what concerns storage:

- It’s important to use the summer climate to dry naturally the biomass, since the climate in other seasons makes drying more complex and with a higher loss of dry matter

- Covered storage is a more convenient but more expansive method

- Storage of full plants more than fractioned biomasses is a good way to lower moisture

2.For what concerns secondary milling:

- Using an “impact mill” brings to high moisture reductions (up to 20%), depending by the rotational speed and the dimension of the holes that control the exit of biomass from the mill

- It is recommended to continue the experiments and the research on this field, since this is only a preliminary study

3.For what concerns pelletting:

- It is possible to achieve moisture loss of 10%

- It is recommended to continue the experiments and the research on this field, since this is only a preliminary study
