Note:
A natural gas spark ignition heavy-duty engine for bus application was realized in three high efficiency configurations: lean burn with and without oxidant catalyst, and stoichiometric with three-way catalyst and exhaust gas recirculation.
The lean-burn engine without catalyst showed the highest thermal efficiency, while total hydrocarbon emission - measured according to the R49 European Regulation – resulted higher than the limit. The other two versions showed a slightly lower thermal efficiency and pollutant emissions compliant with the limits.
