Energy and material flow analysis using input-output process models

Note:
Use of Input-Output approach allows to interrelate flows of energy and materials and to estimate use and consumption of fuels, and production of pollutants within the activities located in a given area. In this work it is proposed to apply an Input-Output Process Approach to build models that analyse supply chains in a given

geographic area (local supply chain). In particular, the relationships among a Product Supply Chain aimed at the production of final products, and an Energy Supply Chain aimed at the supply of energy are investigated.

Materials/energy accounting and forecasting models are then discussed. In the general framework of sustainable development, this analysis can help focusing upon Economics/Energy/Environment interactions of development programs applied to local areas. If the demand of final (to the end-consumer) products and the set of production processes are known in a supply chain, these Input-Output Process Models can provide the demand of energy within the supply chain and foresee how to satisfy it in terms of production processes if a set of energy resources available in the local area and a set of constraints on pollution emissions are known.

The main aims of the models are therefore to account for the demand of energy products and the production of pollutants in the Product Supply Chain and to understand how to satisfy this demand with a mix of local energy sources in respect of waste/pollution constraints.
