Note:
A single three-dimensional element is used to model the junction between several 1D ducts. The momentum equation is solved along the three directions in the space while the mass and energy balance are accounted for at the connection with the pipes. Compared to simplified methods based on quasi-dimensional assumption, this
approach is able to provide an enhanced description of the phenomena occurring in the junction resulting in an improved prediction of the wave motion without an excessive computational burden. In particular the strong directional effects produced by the complex geometry are described without relying on coefficients obtained from experimental measurements. The 3Dcell approach has been also adopted to model the behavior of silencers.
