The paper presents a method for evaluating the local entropy generation and the global exergetic dissipation in mixed convective flows. A standard well-tested computer fluid-dynamic code FLUENT is employed to solve the coupled momentum and energy equations and the resulting velocity and temperature fields are used to compute, by a specific subroutine ENTREXE, the local entropy production term and the global exergetic dissipation. The procedure is a rather general one and can be applied to a variety of flow-configurations and to fluid of different physical characteristics.Maps of irreversible entropy production due to heat transfer and viscous dissipation are proposed which can be employed as a guide to design changes in devices and to analysis of unstable flows.
