Note:
In order to control and mitigate the potential consequences of dust explosions several techniques have been developed such as dust explosion venting and dust explosion suppression. The design of dust explosion venting and suppression systems in practice require the knowledge and ten the evaluation of the thermo-kinetic parameters usually determined by standardized experiments. We developed a numerical tool for the evaluation of the thermo-kinetic parameters of dust explosion. The model is based on a detailed reaction mechanism assuming that the pyrolysis/devolatilization step is very fast and gas combustion is controlling dust explosion which is true at diameter lower than a critical value. The model allows the determination of the most conservative values of Kst Pmax as function of the dust concentration.
In the present paper the model is used to evaluate the Kst value of several dusts utilized in various process industries as function of dust concentration. The obtained data were successfully compared with the available experimental results. Finally, the effect of turbulence occurring in experiments and in plant facilities on the evaluation of these parameters was discussed.
