Fluid dynamic analysis of a low solidity wells turbine

This work aims to provide an analysis of the performance of a low solidity Wells turbine designed for power generation in an innovative sea wave energy device. In particular, the effects of the tip leakage flow and the hysteretic mechanism under oscillating flow conditions have been studied. The analysis has been carried out by solving the unsteady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The flow has been considered incompressible and the SST k-ω model has been used to account for turbolence. The analysis shows that the tip clearence region must be taken into account to provide reliable numerical results. Furthermore, the unsteady flow solver is needed to capture the hysteretic behaviour, wich is affected by the presence of the tip leakage flow.
