Two bubbling fluidized bed combustors, both with an internal diameter of 41 mm, were batchwise operated to characterize fundamental aspects of fluidized bed combustion of refuse derived fuel (RDF) obtained from municipal solid wastes, and ebonite, obtained as an auto shredder waste fuel from scrapping of starter batteries. Different experimental procedures were used to separately investigate comminution phenomena. A circulating fluidized bed combustor, having a riser 41 mm ID and 6.1 m high, was continuously operated to evaluate overall combustion efficiency and gas composition along the riser and at the combustor exit. Samples of all solids (char + sand) contained in the riser were also collected by means of an under vacuum vessel connected at the bottom of the riser.
