Note:
Results are reported of an ongoing collaboration between the Energetic Department of Florence and the Italian electric company ENEL, on the improvement of the pilot burner for a low emission gas turbine combustion chamber. The activity is aimed at extending the operable margin of the engine as well as reducing the pollutant emissions. Measurements on atmospheric pressure test rig were focused to understand how different geometries of the pilot injection fuel nozzle can affect the overall air/fuel mixing and to tune and validate numerical design tools. Preliminary aerodynamic characterization of the pilot burner were performed by 1-D, 0-D calculation. Different geometrical solutions were analyzed and performances estimated to select a modified version to be experimentally tested. The results of the measurements confirmed the strong influence of the selected geometric parameters on the mixing process and the capability of the prediction model used to give right estimations.
