Note:
This paper accomplishes the Galerkin-finite element solution of through-flow calculations in axial compressors interfaced with boundary-layer computations. Equations of motion, continuity and energy are averaged circumferentially in combination with Stokes's stream function to form a second order non-linear elliptic partial differential equation. The domain of the problem is divided into eight node isoparametric quadrilater finite elements. The Galerkin's criterion is used to derive the element characteristics equation. The element equation is then assembled into a global equation. The resulting non-linear algebraic equations are then solved iteretively by banded modified Cholesky method. Corrections are made for the three end wall boundary-layer effects of blockage, force defect and loss by matching, iteretively, the main inviscid flow solution with boundary layer computations. Some examples are considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
