THREE DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION OF A FIN HEAT SINK SYSTEM FOR THE THERMAL CONTROL OF A COMPOUND PARABOLIC CONCENTRATOR

The aim of this work is the three dimensional numerical analysis and the optimization of a fin heat sink system for the thermal control of a Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) applied to a high temperature solar receiver. Simulations are carried out for a system made up by a solar receiver coupled with a finned CPC to evaluate temperature
distributions. Four different fins configurations around the CPC are investigated in order to find that with the best thermal performance in terms of lowest CPC wall temperatures with the minimum fins number. Among the four considered configurations with one, three, seven and thirteen fins the system with seven fins is, therefore, chosen as a good compromise between performances and costs.
Wall temperatures in the chosen systems are nearly independent of the angular coordinate. The efficiency of four significant fins is evaluated, together with the local efficiency of a fraction of their surface, with reference to the full length and to an infinitesimal angle.
