Note:
Gas-solid adsorption based systems are suitable for cold production or heat transformation. They use low temperature energy sources (e.g. solar collectors, industrial waste energy). Among their advantages are ecological indifference and variety of working conditions (temperature and pressure). In order to build a working laboratory prototype of chemical ice maker an analysis of its upper performace characteristics are necessary. In this paper selected aspects of thermodynamic modeling of ammonia based solid sorption ice maker have been presented. The analysis deals with ideal COP values and ice production capabilities in regard to physical and chemical characteristics of chloride salts: CaCl2, ZnCl2 and BaCl2. For analysis the limiting influence of mass transfer and chemical kinetics has been neglected.
Experimental prototype using solar collector coupled with condenser/evaporator and the fixed bed chemical reactor (adsorber) has been designed for experimental purposes. The solar collector is used to provide heat for desorption (regeneration of adsorber). Overall performance of such system have been analyzed and the obtained results of theoretical calculations have been presented. The pressure and constrained temperature levels depended on the thermochemical properties of selected working pair (ammonia-chloride salt - two different salts have been used in analysis). Obtained COPnet (Solar COP) was calculated for different cases, assuming collector efficiency 0,68. Ice production capabilities are based on operating temperatures of the evaporator (for 1kg of ice).
