Sequential genetic/gradient progressive optimization. Part II

Pubblicazione

Collana: CA - 61 - Perugia 2006

Note:
This paper proposes a sequential (genetic/gradient) progressive optimization strategy, which is capable of optimizing a multimodal objective function derived from the solution of discretized governing equations, in a computational time comparable to
that required by a number of gradient optimizations equal to the number of local optima found. The proposed method performs an initial global search on coarse grids and with partially converged solutions, to identify the basins of attraction of the better
optima. In this second part, two fluid-dynamic applications, namely the inverse design (unimodal objective function) and the direct design (multimodal objective function) of an airfoil in inviscid transonic flow conditions, are used to demonstrate the
robustness and the efficiency of the method described in Part 1, and, in particular, the capability to identify one or more nearoptimum regions even using coarse grids and partially converged flow solutions, while retaining the high efficiency of the
progressive gradient technique.
