Note:
The mitigation of CO2 emissions from power plants is part of the JOULE II Programme initiated by the European Communities for the period 19911994. In this framework, we have proposed the use of CO2 as working fluid in gas turbines. The proposed system is to be looked at as an alternative to CO2 removal techniques from flue gas emitted from the stack of a power plant. In this paper, the performance of an existing industrial gas turbine of the 150 MW class operating on CO2 is calculated using a home made code and is compared to that of the same machine operating on air in a simple cycle. To begin with, properties of CO2 are compared to those of air. Then the modelling of the gas turbine and the computational procedure are presented. Finally, the possible use of an existing industrial air gas turbine when CO2 is the working fluid is discussed. The main conclusion of the work is that, on the basis of the results for the first stage of the turbomachinery, an existing gas turbine designed on air operation could theoretically operate on CO2 provided that the rotational speed is reduced to the right value.
