Collana: CA - 49 - Perugia 1994

Note:
In the paper results of measurements of thermal properties of PCM (phase change materials) are presented. These include specific heat, temperature of phase change, latent heat and enthalpy as a function of temperature. Different kind of materials were taken into consideration from the viewpoint of e.g. solar energy storage. To measure thermal capacity of materials two techniques were used - standard DSC (for small samples and pure materials) and simple thermal analysis (quasi-adiabatic calorimeter) based on the measurement of temperature field in rather big solidification was investigated (in special set-up for fast cycling). On the base of measurements mathematical formulas describing enthalpy vs. temperature for some materials were developed. These are very useful for computer simulation of thermal storage systems with PCM. Some results of experimental investigation of low temperature thermal energy storage in PCM are also described. This included both investigation of energy storage unit with thermal capacity of about 60 MJ and measurement of unsteady temperature fields in single element (long cylinder) with PCM.
