Particulate air filters for general ventilation - Determination of the filtration performance

This European Standard refers to particulate air filters for general ventilation. These filters are classified according to their performance as measured in this test procedure. This European Standard contains requirements to be met by particulate air filters. It describes testing methods and the test rig for measuring filter performance. In order to obtain results for comparison and classification purposes, particulate air filters should be tested against two synthetic aerosols, a fine aerosol for measurement of filtration efficiency as a function of particle size within a particle size range 0,2 m to 3,0 m, and a coarse one for obtaining information about dust holding capacity and, in the case of coarse filters, filtration efficiency with respect to coarse loading dust (arrestance). This European Standard applies to air filters having an initial efficiency of less than 98 % with respect to 0,4 µm particles. Filters should be tested at an air flow rate between 0,24 m3/s (850 m3/h) and 1,5 m3/s (5400 m3/h). The performance results obtained in accordance with this standard cannot by themselves be quantitatively applied to predict performance in service with regard to efficiency and lifetime. Other factors influencing performance to be taken into account are described in Annex A (Normative) and Annex B (Informative).

UNI EN ISO 10121-1:2014

Test method for assessing the performance of gas-phase air cleaning media and devices for general ventilation - Part 1: Gas-phase air cleaning media (ISO 10121-1:2014)

This proposed standard aims to provide a laboratory test method for media and devices which are used for removal of gas phase contaminants from air in general ventilation. The standard deals with granular media, fibres or pads and full size, production, gas filters where the media are incorporated. It is not aimed at technologies such as scrubbers, absorbers, non-sorptive devices or packed columns unless they fit into the specified test apparatus. Nuclear and military applications are specifically excluded. Part 1 of the proposed standard will cover the the sorptive medium such as activated carbon, silica gel, activated alumina, molecular sieves, specialist adsorptive fibre based products as well as the sorptive capacity of traditional fibres, particulates and granules, provided they are incorporated into a filter structure. It is proposed that the new standard will be based on the attached draft which will be expanded to incorporate detail from existing documents.

Air filters for general ventilation - Part 3: Determination of the gravimetric efficiency and the air flow resistance versus the mass of test dust captured (ISO 16890-3:2016)

This International Standard refers to particulate air filters for general ventilation having an initial efficiency of less than 99 % with respect to PM1 values as defined in ISO 16890-1 Air filters for general ventilation — Part 1: Technical specifications, requirements and efficiency classification system based upon Particulate Matter (PM). Filters used in the ventilation of low-rise residential buildings or in portable room-air cleaners are excluded from the scope of this standard. This International standard describes the procedure to determine the gravimetric efficiency and the resistance to airflow for a given air cleaning device. After determination of the initial particle removal efficiency and the conditioned particle removal efficiency, the filter element is loaded with synthetic dust until its final test pressure drop is reached. The pressure drop curve versus the dust loading is recorded during the course of dust loading to determine the test dust holding capacity. The performance results obtained in accordance with this series of standards cannot by themselves be quantitatively applied to predict performance in service with regard to efficiency and lifetime. Other factors influencing performance to be taken into account are described in Annex A (informative).

Field testing of general ventilation filtration devices and systems for in situ removal efficiency by particle size and resistance to airflow (ISO 29462:2013)

This document describes a procedure of measuring the performance of general ventilation air cleaning devices in their end use installed configuration. The performance measurements include removal efficiency by particle size and the resistance to airflow. The procedures for test include the definition and reporting of the system airflow. The procedure describes a method of counting ambient air particles of 0.3um to 5.0um upstream and downstream of the in-place air cleaner(s) in a functioning air handling system. The procedure describes the reduction of particle counter data to calculate removal efficiency by particle size. Since filter installations vary dramatically in design and shape a protocol for evaluating the suitability of a site for filter evaluation and for system evaluation is included. When the evaluated site conditions meet the minimum criteria established for system evaluation, the performance evaluation of the system can also be performed according to this procedure. The procedure for testing also describes performance specifications for the testing equipment and defines procedures of calculating and reporting the results. This procedure is not intended for measuring performance of portable or movable room air cleaners. This standard is not intended for evaluation of HEPA or ULPA filter installation(s).

The envelope for testing is in the range of 0.25 m3/s (900 m3/h) up to 1.67 m3/s (6000 m3/h) Parameters to be evaluated include fractional particle removal efficiency (0.3-1.2 um for fine filters and 1.0-5.5 um for coarse filters), airflow resistance (energy consumption), loading characteristics. This international standard applies to air filters having an initial efficiency of less than 99.98% with respect to 0.4 um particles. Air filters for general ventilation - Part 2: Measurement of fractional efficiency and air flow resistance (ISO 16890-2:2016)

This International Standard refers to particulate air filters for general ventilation having an initial efficiency of less than 99 % with respect to 0,4 µm particles. Filters used in the ventilation of low-rise residential buildings or portable room-air cleaners are excluded from the scope of this standard. It describes the technical specifications, requirements and a method of test for the fractional efficiency measurement and resistance to airflow. The method is applicable for air flow rates between 0,25 m³/s (900 m³/h, 530 ft³/min) and 1,5 m³/s (5400 m³/h, 3178 ft³/min), referring to a test duct with a nominal face area of 0,61 m x 0,61 m. Filters in the higher end and above 99 % initial efficiency with respect to 0,4 µm particles are tested and classified according to other standards (see ISO 29463, part 1-5). Filters according to this series of standards are rated by their removal efficiency to PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 aerosol fractions. The particle collection efficiency of the filter element is measured as a function of the particle size in the range of 0,3 to 10 µm of the unloaded and unconditioned filter element. In a second step, a full filter element shall be conditioned (discharged) in an artificial aging step to provide information about the intensity of the electrostatic removal mechanism. The results from this second step are used to calculate the average efficiency in each of the PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 size ranges by weighting the fractional efficiency values according to the standardized and normalized particle size distribution of the related fraction of the ambient aerosol. This standardized and normalized particle size distribution is defined in this standard
